The King : Porsche's 911

Porsche's iconic 911 is arguably the most influential car in history, and laid the foundation for the German automaker. For fifty year, Porsche has continued to refine the rear - engine layout, even Impact-Site-Verification: c87b60bf-7d78-4317-9d16-3dc6cef17b06 when it fall short of the mid - engine layout in terms of handling. The rear engine layout however, has allowed the 911 to have incredible interior space, compared to mid - engined competitors, and also offering a rear row in a 2+2 configuration, only seen in front engined sports cars such as the DB 12.

The Birth of an Icon

The Porsche 911 was first introduced in 1964 as the successor to the 356 . Designed by the son of the company's founder, Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche, the 911 was an evolution of the Porsche brand. It was first named the Porsche 901, but due to disputes with Peugeot, they soon renamed it to the 911. The first 911 had round headlights, a two door body and a rear - engine layout, just like the current models. This car had a 2.0 liter flat six, a layout that Porsche is so famous for.

Evolution Through the Decades

The 911 has went through many changes over the course of over half a century, however it remains remarkably similar to the first one. It still has that iconic sloping roof and two door body, it keeps it's round headlights and still is exclusively powered by a flat 6 ranging from a 3.0 liter turbo with 388 horsepower to a 4.0 liter naturally aspirated flat 6 producing 518 horsepower, and turbocharged models with 650 horsepower that don't sound especially noteworthy but can complete the 1/4 mile in 9.9 seconds, according to a test by Car and Driver.

The Modern Porsche 911

The modern Porsche 911 is a testament to engineering excellence, with the comfortable, daily - driver base model 911 carrera to the track focused 911 GT3 RS and the upcoming 992.2 generation GT2 RS set to break the record around the Nürburgring by the AMG one. Personally, I believe the best car so far of this generation is the Porsche 911 S/T a homage to the historic manual transmission 911s. This generation offers rear axle steering and mild hybrid technology, while keeping precise handling and the rear engine platform of the first 911. The car comes in two bodystyles, a targa soft - top convertible and a hard top coupe / GT. No matter what your intentions to use the car are, whether you like open air driving or want a track - focused car, you can find a 911 that suits you and your need perfectly.
